🌊 Jefferson Chalmers Canal Closure City Meetings: Updates
Jefferson Chalmers Canal Closure + Tiger Dam Updates
Hey Neighbor 👋
It’s Andy and Allison on Ashland (AAA!) with some important updates on the upcoming public meetings the city is holding. These meetings are about the proposed canal closures, Tiger Dams, and other flooding issues.
Summary:
Last night’s meeting
Next official city meeting: Tuesday, October 11th at 6PM
Future city meetings
Joining the cause, volunteering.
Ok! Let’s get into it!
> Last Night’s CDC Meeting Debrief
Prior to last night’s meeting we received word from trusted city sources that the canal closures were on the agenda to discuss. Then, the in-person meeting as shared in the flyers was redirected to a Zoom-only meeting with a 100-person limit.
Finally, it was decided by the meeting hosts to bump canal closure discussion to the Tuesday meeting. See below.
For those who couldn’t attend because of the 100 person limit, I would not sweat it. Discussion was mostly around the messy lead line replacement project going on in the eastern part of the neighborhood. Great information was shared about how to bring up issues with the city’s contractors, how to apply for backwater valves, and incentive programs for seniors.
If you want more information on this, I would reach out to the Jefferson Chalmers CDC. The CDC is an excellence source of information. Their Facebook page is here: click
> Next official city meeting: Tuesday October 11th at 6PM at Hope Community Church
The Department of Neighborhoods is holding a community meeting about the proposed canal closure, Tiger Dams, and other flooding issues. This is the one to attend! The city should be announcing their draft plan to close the canals to the river. If they don’t, ask about it. Ask to see the plans.
🚨 In-person ONLY! This is a critical meeting to pack with residents to voice their concerns over the proposed plans. Please attend in person. Alert your neighbors and bring them as well.
Location: Hope Community Church 14456 E. Jefferson, Detroit, MI. Tuesday, October 11th, 6:00PM.
If details change, we’ll update it at www.SaveTheCanals.com — happy to answer any questions, respond to this email and copy Allison at [email protected]
> Future city virtual meetings
The city is holding two virtual meetings about this issue on Monday, October 17th and Wednesday, October 19th. These meetings are difficult to speak in, so you should attend the in-person meeting first on Tuesday the 11th.
Links and passwords to these meetings are at www.savethecanals.com because they are subject to change.

We need your help. We’re going to flyer the entire neighborhood this weekend to get attendance up at the in-person meeting on Tuesday and to alert our neighbors.
We need three things:
Flyer distribution. Allison is leading this effort and will split up blocks. Please reach out to her at [email protected] if you’d like to help.
Funds. If you’re in a position to help offset the costs of flyers and yard signs, please connect with Allison at the email address above. We’re purchasing materials with our own funds for now.
Leadership. We need people with time and energy to help us lead and grow this movement. Respond to this email and let me know if you’d like to attend a working group meeting this Saturday or in the future. We can’t do this alone.
Thank you for tuning in to this update. Future updates will come by email and at savethecanals.com
