🚌 THE LIST: Easily the most unusual message you're getting all week.

The odds this is for you is near zero. But there is a chance.

Hello again, old friend:

There is a near-zero chance that you are a diesel technician. That’s just math: there are over 35k of you fine folks on THE LIST yet there are only a handful of excellent diesel technicians on the faith of this earth.

Trust me. I’ve checked.

That said, I’m in the business of buying “cosmic lottery tickets” and believing that at least one of you is the fantastic diesel technician we’ve been looking for — or you might know someone, at the very least.

What follows is the job description for this excellent job in search of an equally excellent human. If you or someone you know fits the bill, we’d love to hear from you/them:

Now Hiring: Experienced Diesel Technician for $35/hour. Full-Time or Part-Time.

Small fleet, dedicated workspace, no stress.

The Detroit Bus Company is looking for a skilled Diesel Technician to join our team and help keep our unique fleet of buses rolling smoothly. If you have a passion for solving mechanical puzzles, enjoy keeping the wheels of a community-focused company turning, and want to be part of a team that values quality work and positive impact, we’d love to meet you!

About the Job

As our Diesel Technician, you’ll be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing our fleet of buses, which includes older Detroit classics and some newer additions. You’ll have the chance to work on a variety of systems, including engines, electrical components, brakes, HVAC, and more. Your work will directly support our mission to connect Detroiters and keep our buses safe and reliable.

We offer both full-time and part-time positions, depending on your availability and preference. Full-time roles offer consistent hours and benefits, while part-time roles provide a flexible schedule focused on ensuring that every bus leaves the shop ready to roll. You’ll work closely with our operations team to plan and execute maintenance schedules, address repair needs as they come up, and prioritize safety at every step.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform regular maintenance, including oil changes, brake checks, and inspections.

  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, electrical systems, and other bus components.

  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, following all safety protocols.

  • Keep detailed records of work completed and parts used.

  • Collaborate with our operations team to ensure on-time service.

About You:

We’re looking for someone who has experience working on diesel engines and other mechanical systems, but more than that, we want someone who loves problem-solving and takes pride in getting the job done right. If you’re the kind of person who’s always looking for ways to improve processes, enjoys troubleshooting complex systems, and values teamwork, this could be a great fit.

What We Value:

  • Technical Know-How: You should have experience working with diesel engines, and a familiarity with bus or large vehicle maintenance is a big plus. You’ll be responsible for diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance.

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Mechanical issues are like puzzles – we want someone who enjoys finding the solution and making things run smoothly. You don’t have to know everything, but you should know how to find the answer.

  • Reliability: We take safety seriously, and we need someone who’s committed to ensuring our buses are safe for the road.

  • Flexibility and a Team Attitude: Things can change quickly, and we value technicians who can adapt and are willing to support others.

Why The Detroit Bus Company?

We’re a social benefit company focused on caring for people, the planet, and then profit – in that order. For every ride sold, we donate a ride to a Detroit student in need. This mission drives everything we do, and we’re looking for someone who believes in our mission and wants to be part of the solution.

We’re a small but tight-knit team, and we make sure that every voice is heard.

Pay and Benefits

We believe in paying a thriving wage so that you can focus on your work without financial stress. We offer competitive pay starting at $35 per hour, commensurate with experience. Full-time employees receive benefits including health insurance, paid time off, and retirement savings options. Part-time employees benefit from a flexible schedule that can fit around other commitments. We prioritize a healthy work-life balance for all team members, ensuring that when your workday ends, you can fully enjoy your personal time.

How to Apply

Introduce yourself! We want to know what makes you, you. Tell us about:

  • Your experience working with diesel engines and what excites you about the work.

  • Why you want to work at The Detroit Bus Company and not somewhere else.

  • A time you solved a tough problem and felt proud of the outcome.

We’re hiring on a rolling basis, so apply as soon as you’re ready. If you have any questions, reach out to us at [email protected] or by calling 313-444-2871.

We can’t wait to hear from you!
